About This Book
Islam came to Patani, Southern Thailand in the 15th century CE and it gradually became an influential centre of Islamic learning and education. Patanis' ulama (religious teachers) became widely known and helped to create the continuing distinctive, Patani Muslim identity. This book describes the basic and higher education offered in the pondoks (now 'Islamic private schools') and also the central governments educational policies and its 1976 introduction of Islamic education into government primary schools. Higher education and the introduction of Arabic and Islamic studies at Prince of Songkla University are also discussed. With black and white photographs, bibliography and index.
