His career is traced from his birth in poverty, orphanage education, work as a teacher, and later as Secretary-General of the Malay Teachers' Union, and from 1991, and as a Member of Parliament. His warm personality, constructive commitment to drug abusers and their families, and to the needs of the Malay community gave him a unique status.
