Back To The Old Habits: Isolationism Or The Self-Preservation Of Burma's Military Regime
by Egreteau, Renaud; Larry Jagan
About This Book
Two specialists from IRASEC, Bangkok explore the ongoing isolationism, or self-preservation stances of Burma's military regime. After exploring the country's isolationist history 1948-88 and its post-1988 politico/commercial tactical internationalist policies under the SLORC, chapter 2 deals with the post-2003 nationalist hardliners and the entrenchment of the junta. Many ongoing and sensitive issues come into chapter 3's "Isolationism without isolation". These include: the SLORC's relations with ASEAN; Sino-Burmese partnership issues; engagements with India; and partnerships of various kinds with Russia, Saudi Arabia, Israel and non-aligned movement countries. The non-relations with the US and EU are noted. Sketch map and bibliography.
