Many visits and family contacts followed the 1965 field studies at Kanowit, Sarawak of anthropologist/archaeologist R.C. Fidler (1940-2009) whose informally written study of the Kanowit Chinese Community written in 1972, was published in 2010. In 1970 Chinese made up 72% of Kanowit Bazaar's population of some 1700. The study gives details of land distribution and buildings and house structures as well as occupational and family patterns, and religious and ethnic interaction at a time when the country's economics and politics were developing in new directions.
