by Jarnagin, Laura (Ed.)
About This Book
These 12 papers form the second of two volumes which present the work of the significant 201 ISEAS-MARA Conference at Singapore and Malacca in which interdisciplinary scholars explore the 16th century interaction of Portugal and Southeast Asia which led to long-lasting Luso-Asian bonds and legacies. Four papers on the early and formative periods of interaction look at 17th century Catholic religious and cultural activities, in Portuguese diplomacy in Siam 1684-86 and in 19th century East Timor. The five papers in Part 2 look at language, architecture and music with reference to Malacca, Makista, the forts on Ternate and Tidore islands and in musical culture. Part 3 looks at adversity and accommodation in the 16th and 17th century's harmonious coexistence of Portugal and China, in the buildings of Macau, and in the status and roles played by Portuguese Eurasians in Dutch-ruled Malacca 1641-1800. Little-known areas of history are explored. With sketch maps, bibliographies, glossary and index.
