About This Book

Anak Kampung Bernama Sidek is a 36-page bilingual children's illustrated book. It is Sidek Saniff's true account centred on his memories of growing up in a kampung before highrises dominated the Singapore landscape. The former Senior Minister of State, who turned 80 recently, lived in Kampung Radin Mas, a Malay village that had its beginnings in the 1880s and was demolished in 1973 as part of the nation's development plan. Guided by the adage 'It takes a village to raise a child', Cikgu Sidek - who was bestowed the title Tokoh Guru, or Exemplary Teacher, by his alma mater Sultan Idris Training College, now UPSI - looks at a time when kampung residents celebrated the kampung spirit by looking out for one another as a family. It was this same 'helping hand' spirit that led him to start Mendaki and Tabung Amal Aidilfitri. With 12 grandchildren of his own, Cikgu Sidek tapped on his experience both as a teacher and a grandfather to select vignettes he believes will 'speak' to young readers and inspire them; he addresses them the way a loving grandfather would.
