Burma's Mass Lay Meditation Movement: Buddhism and the Cultural Construction of Power. Related to her own years of experience of practicing meditation and as a Buddhist nun having prolonged stays in Burma, this American anthropologist discusses the widespread adoption of meditation by the country's lay people. Meditation is practiced throughout the country by people of many backgrounds, including the military. Ways in which this movement has influenced or challenged the regime are discussed and some received constructions of its relevance are questioned. With glossary, bibliography and index.
