These six substantial extensively referenced papers are on aspects of Philippine Church History by an established Jesuit and historian. They deal with aspects of the inner development of Catholicism which has since the 16th century been a significant factor in the country's life, development and controversies. Papers are on: the Manila Synod of 1582 and the Bishop Domingo de Salazar; the 1700-1768 "Golden Age" of the Philippine Church; Syncretism in the Church; a long discussion of the controversial 1864 "Burgos Manifesto" defending the local clergy; and on the "Hispanisized Clergy in an Americanized Country" 1910-1970, and some still unresolved issues of identity.
