The largely Taiwan-based East Asian Barometer made this 2001-2003 survey research study of prospects for democratic consolidation in East Asian countries (Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, China and Hong Kong). The research methods are detailed. The results are seen to show that, in general, a lack of support for alternatives, rather than enthusiasm for democratic patterns, keeps formally democratic political structures in place.
