Both concerned social scientists and reflective activists have been involved in this cooperative and wide-ranging study of the democratisation movement in post-Suharto Indonesia. Substantial field research in 2001/2 underpins nineteen case studies of different areas including the more far-flung territories. Many dimensions of social and political structure are discussed related to possible democratic alternatives for development. Ways of prioritising mass mobilisation from below, on a basis of common interests and relationship to the state are discussed as a possible way forward. With tabulated data, bibliography and index.
