This reprint of the 1956 Cornell study of regional autonomy in Indonesia will facilitate understanding of some still-problematic issues. The report is based on detailed consideration of three provinces (East Java, Central Sumatra and Sulawesi). Problems and issues of central supervision and control, regional loyalties and fears of Java's dominance are outlined. The provisions of the relevant legislation of earlier periods and the proposed 1956 system are set out.
