This is a detailed account of the life and work in Hong Kong of Scotsman Frederick Stewart (1836-89). Stewart was appointed Inspector of Schools and Principal of Central School (which evolved into the University of Hong Kong) in 1861. His career in education and subsequently in government service (at times as Acting Governor) is discussed.
