For more than a century, the US and the Philippines have been bound together militarily, economically, and culturally. This book examines the longstanding problematic relationship between the two countries. Each chapter examines a separate issue of the linked history, including the proto-nationalism of Jose Rizal; the portrayal of the Philippines in an early colonial era American children's book; a World War II movie starring John Wayne; and a contemporary novel by F. Sionil Jose. Ultimately, Delmendo demonstrates how the effects of U. S. imperialism in the Philippines continue to resonate in US foreign policy in the post Cold War era and the war on terrorism. With bibliography and index.
