The book, written in Chinese, is a collection of articles centered on the Singapore Chinese society. It is divided thematically into three sections. The first section analyses the internal social structure and changing dynamics of the pre-World War 2 Chinese society in Singapore as well as Malacca with special reference to temples and social organisations. Biographical studies of a prominent self-made entrepreneur Tan Lark Sye and a former cabinet minister Ong Pang Boon in the second section shed new light on their economic and political life. Section 3 touches on the importance of oral history and commemorative publications published by Chinese social organisations as vital sources for the study of Singapore Chinese society.
